Unity Biotechnology, located in South San Francisco, is an early stage biopharmaceutical company developing therapeutics for diseases-associated with aging with the goal of extending life and healthspan. A pioneer in targeting cellular senescence, Unity has an advancing clinical ocular program to address vision loss associated with diabetes, and a pre-clinical research program the fast-paced field of neurodegenerative diseases.

We are seeking to hire an Associate Scientist to join our in vitro pharmacology team as we develop cell culture systems and evaluate therapeutic targets using antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs). This position is primarily lab-based, involving both basic research as well as development of robust cell based  systems and medium throughput assays, producing SOPs to support our neuro program. As part of a tight four-member team inside the greater 31 person research based Discovery group, this position carries responsibilities ranging from experimental design and execution to data and project presentation to the executive team. This individual will play a key role in supporting a collaborative advancement of candidate ASOs through in vitro and in vivo studies to identify development candidates.

The successful candidate should be a strong lab-based individual contributor and enjoy the experimental process including data generation, interpretation, and documentation. Familiarity with cellular senescence is advantageous and prior experience with ASOs including design, mechanisms, and transfection is highly desirable. Excellent communication skills and a team-based mentality are essential. As the candidate will be joining an early drug-development program, problem solving and rigorous quantitation will be critical to making go, no-go decisions.


  • Degree in molecular or cellular biology, biochemistry, or related field
  • Bachelor’s degree with 5+ years of relevant industrial lab-based research, Master’s with 2-4 years experience, or a PhD 0-2 years experience.
  • Experience in nucleic acid modalities, modification chemistries, sequence selection, and mechanism of action is preferred
  • Proven track record working in primary mammalian cell culture systems, preferably in neurobiology or with CNS derived cells.
  • Working knowledge of qPCR, SDS-PAGE and Western blotting, ELISA, and transfection protocols.
  • Experience with medium to high throughput assay setup and analysis.
  • Good work ethic and collaborative attitude to achieve technical and corporate goals in a timely manner.
  • Creative and critical thinking, data management and documentation, problem solving, and eagerness to learn.
